The following is a list of the strongest earthquakes that have occurred in Aotearoa New Zealand in the past 365 days, with a shaking intensity of Weak or greater:

  • Magnitude 6.1 - 18 November 2022 - Wellington region
  • Magnitude 4.9 - 15 March 2023 - Taranaki region
  • Magnitude 4.7 - 20 January 2023 - Bay of Plenty region
  • Magnitude 4.6 - 10 February 2023 - Hawke's Bay region
  • Magnitude 4.5 - 28 December 2022 - Wairarapa region

Effects of Recent Earthquakes

The recent earthquakes in Aotearoa New Zealand have caused varying degrees of shaking and damage. The magnitude 6.1 earthquake in the Wellington region caused widespread shaking and some damage to buildings.
